For mass produced boots the Danner Quarry USA treated me well, and any of Thorogood's USA line have treated me well. Red Wing boots have never fit me well and the Supersole 2.0 isn't a stiff enough platform for shovel work. Either way, get some boot oil and clean/condition them and they'll last a lot longer.

Komuga. You need to wear a straight fitting pant with a leg opening around 8". There's no way around it if you want a good fit without ruining the silhouette of your pants. It's not impractical at all. It's good to have a pair of straight denim, even if you didn't own engineer boots or other boots with a big shaft.
