Council is pleased to advise that maintenance to the Mt Fox Camping Ground has been completed and the grounds are now ready and available for Easter camping. Mayor Ramon Jayo said "The Mt Fox Rural Fire Brigade has kindly agreed to oversee the area on Council's behalf over the Easter long weekend."

Mt. Fox is a small, tussock covered peak on the South Island's West Coast, located just outside of the tourist center of Fox Glacier. The peak is reached via a rough, poorly maintained trail that climbs relentlessly up through a diverse forest before reaching the open tops.

Things we have to offer
Mount Fox is 75km south-west of Ingham via the Herbert River Valley and the Seaview Range. Travel west from Ingham along Abergowrie Road to Trebonne. From here the route is well signposted. About 20km from the park in the Mount Fox Forest Reserve, a lookout provides views across the valley. Most of the route is sealed, with the last 5km unsealed.

The Mount Fox Route is a fantastic West Coast tramp for experienced and fit trampers, with fantastic views across to Fox Glacier. Length: ~7.4km return with 1,200m elevation gain (& then descent) Time taken: 8 hours return, we took 5 hours up, overnight stay, then 3 hours down the next day. Difficulty: difficult.

The 33 unit Fox Creek Campground is located along the Wyoming stretch of the Beartooth Highway. It's in the Clark's Fork Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest. The campground is 11 miles from the NE entrance to Yellowstone Park and the closest community is Cooke City which is 7 miles away. Be Aware!!!

Fox Creek Campground on the Beartooth Highway
Mount Fox is an isolated, well-preserved, and truly dormant volcano within Girringun National Park. Research reveals a story of a violent, volcanic explosion that created the now standing Mount Fox roughly 100,000 years ago. Evidence can be seen where lava once spewed from the crater and flowed 10 metres thick down the volcanic mountain slope.
